Fewer Birds in Long Running Census

Fewer Birds in Long Running Census

The annual Christmas bird count was down this year for the Chippewa Valley Audubon Club.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports that the lower numbers likely were due to colder temperatures and more snow than other recent years. A total of 32 club members and friends participated in the count this year. They counted 9,230 birds and 57 different species.

Club member Stan Lilley says birds probably did not move around as much because snow fell throughout most of the day.

Some of the more unusual birds counted included a lesser scaup, a vesper sparrow and a snowy owl.

It was the 61st straight year that the club has participated in the count, which the National Audubon Society has sponsored for 114 years.
