Two students have been suspended and could face criminal charges concerning unauthorized access into East Lansing Public Schools’ computer network.

According to the Lansing State Journal, Superintendent Cliff Seybert sent an an email letter to families Friday saying the scope of the breach is not yet fully known.

The East Lansing Police Department and a cybersecurity firm are investigating and district spokesman Robert Kolt says it could lead to criminal charges.

The newspaper reports that in his letter, Seybert said the district is shutting down PowerSchool,  a program that gives parents access to their children’s assignments and grades,  for a few days. He said families will receive new usernames and passwords when it comes back up.

Seybert asked families to tell the district if they see anything unusual when PowerSchool comes back up again.
