Michigan MPs Return Home After Year at Guantanamo

Posted Thursday, December 19th 2013 @ 10pm

Fifty-four members of an Army National Guard military police unit are back in Michigan after a yearlong deployment in Guantanamo Bay.

The U.S. base in Cuba is where the U.S. keeps prisoners it says are linked to Al-Qaida and other terrorist groups. The Pentagon said this week that 158 prisoners remain at Guantanamo.

The Guard says the returnees are members of the 177th Military Police Brigade. It says 18 of them arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Tuesday to the cheers of family members and friends.

Among those coming home was Master Sgt. Rebecca Witt, a training officer. Her husband was on hand to greet her.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael Witt also serves in the brigade.

About 600 Michigan National Guard members now are deployed worldwide.
