The National Weather Service said Wednesday it had enough time to issue a tornado warning for the EF-0 twister in Ionia County.
NWS in Grand Rapids confirmed an EF-1 tornado struck the Grand Rapids area in a storm system that swept through the area Sunday night. That twister developed so quickly authorities didn't have enough time to issue a warning.
Brandon Hoving, a meteorologist for the NWS in Grand Rapids, told WOOD Radio News a warning was issued for Ionia County.
"We had detected a severe thunderstorm shortly after midnight [and issued a warning]," he said.
Striking several minutes after midnight, the EF-0 twister was on the ground for about 4 minutes and caused only minor damage.
Hoving said the smaller tornado spun out of a different storm system from the one that struck the Grand Rapids area late Sunday.
