Old Tires Could Help Pave Roads

The Muskegon County Road Commission will spend almost a third of a million dollars experimenting with using old tires to help pave the roads.

The money comes from the state's DEQ, which wants to find something useful to do with old tires.

The Holland Sentinel says nearly 7,000  tires will be used in the Muskegon project,  melted and mixed with the asphalt to re-pave three miles of one road in Moorland Township.

County highway engineer Paul Bouman hopes the rubbery road will be more durable and perhaps even resist pot-holing. It also will cost less.
