Philippines Needs Help. Think First Before Making A Donation

Philippines Needs Help. Think First Before Making A Donation
Posted Monday, November 11th 2013 @ 3pm  by Chuck LaTour, WOOD Radio news team

The relief effort in the Philippines has barely begun. As many as 10,000 people -- and perhaps more -- are dead as a result of the typhoon that struck on Friday. Philippine soldiers have been distributing food and water in the city of Tacloban, and teams from the United Nations and other international agencies have been seen there for the first time.

Before you donate to Philippine relief, check with the Better Business Bureau. BBB President Phil Catlett tells WOOD Radio his organization has 26 charities that meet BBB guidelines for giving.

"It means they meet all 20 standards for charitable accountability. Each of these are well-governed. They have evidence that when you give to them they are going to do a good job."

Donors are encouraged to visit the charities' websites to find out more about the nature of the assistance they are providing. Some are engaged in immediate relief while others are focused on longer term recovery efforts.
