Michigan officials are using a nationwide observance to remind people to be cautious as wildfire season approaches.
National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is Saturday. Experts are urging Americans to spend the day making homes and cabins less vulnerable, noting that fires don't always burn everything in their path.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is teaming with the National Fire Protection Association to provide tips about prevention.
They say people should avoid burning debris during windy or dry conditions, dispose of campfire ashes and coals properly, avoid parking and idling in dry grass and remove fuel within 3 to 5 feet of a house's foundation and outbuildings.
Removing dead vegetation surrounding a residence and choosing less-flammable plants are also recommended.
