Turns Out The Capital Is Not Historic.

While the 134 year old Michigan State Capitol Building is generally recognized as among the most impressive Capitol buildings in the country, it is not an official historic site in Michigan.

However there is a move underway to change that.

Legislation has been introduced in the Michigan House and Michigan Senate which establishes the building as a historic site, and the measure also creates a Capitol Commission Committee.

Among other things, supporters say, it will make it easier to maintain the building and the grounds, since the legislation would allow for an annual and specific budget appropriation.

State Senate Republican Roger Kahn of Saginaw told the Lansing-based Gongwer News Service it will give them "a method to keep the Capitol in good condition."

An earlier proposal to make it a state park didn't get off the ground, as it would have added to the already intense competition for funding of state parks.
